Editorial Reviews

"As in Prairie Dogs, the humour in City Dogs is delightful. The characters, again, are the dogs who add their own humour to the story as they are naive but loveable. . . Although it is a sequel, this book can also stand alone and would appeal to a variety of readers, including readers of animal fiction and adventure stories. City Dogs would be an excellent class novel for individual reading or as a read aloud choice. It would be an excellent addition for personal, class, school and public libraries.
Highly recommended."
CM Magazine

"Looking for a great book for the canine fanatics in your family? Try City Dogs, the sequel to Prairie Dogs by Saskatchewan author Glenda Goertzen. . . A rollicking tale of survival and friendship."

City Dogs

Fans anxiously waiting for Glenda Goertzen’s sequel to Prairie Dogs will love City Dogs. All the heroes and villains from Silvertree are back, and the canines find both new friends and dangerous enemies.

The notorious Bull forces Pierre and Dare to run away to the city where they are captured by cruel dog nappers, Beth and Skid. Goertzen uses the prairie’s harsh climate to heighten suspense as Dare is about to whelp and Pierre must lead her through a blinding blizzard. Guided by the wise suggestion of a snowshoe hare, they follow the blinking star to a television studio on the city’s outskirts. Goertzen puts the dogs into stealth mode as they hide safely on a TV stage, making this her best suspenseful and amusing reading.

While Dare and Pierre are struggling to remain hidden, the other loyal members of Prairie Dog fame embark on their own rescue mission. The courageous Mew, Mouse, and Ratter – under Old Sam and Juju’s direction – jump a city bound train. How they reach the TV studio and foil yet another attempted dog napping gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of their own faithful canine companions.

It is Goertzen’s ability to “speak dog” that makes the book so enjoyable for all dog lovers. The black-and-white snapshot-like illustrations by Peter Hudecki are great for readers making the transition from picture books to the development of imaginations from text. He succeeds in keeping even the most reluctant reader part the adventure! (check out page 87)
