Publication to accompany exhibition, ayaandagon: outdoor art installations in an anishinaabe garden, at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, June 16 – Aug 31 2010, curated by William Kingfisher. Essay by Kingfisher, with images of art works by Michael Belmore, Jimson Bowler, and Jude Norris. Ayaandagon is an anishinaabe word that means, ‘to be in a certain place'. Kingfisher's exhibition and essay reflect on this site-specific project, which included consultations with Elders, the selection & planting of 19 traditional, indigenous plants, and the pre-colonial history of the site behind the Gallery. Kingfisher further describes how each of the artists in their own way integrates the past into their contemporary practices. Belmore connects on a global scale and references geologic time; Norris sets the ground for connecting to ancestors in a new landscape; for Bowler, the past is about the beauty of materials he gathers and uses, and the impermanent nature of human experience.
