Description

This book is a detailed, technical report of a full-scale survey and excavation project in the Canadian boreal forest—the first such project accomplished in Manitoba. It was carried out during the summer seasons of 1961 and 1962. Contents of this technical report include the results of a survey carried out in the area to be flooded by the Grand Rapids Hydro-electric Project and the details of an excavation at the Tailrace Bay site (the site selected as the most useful and representative for the entire area. At this site, the materials found, analyzed and interpreted include pre-ceramic time period materials, ceramic time period remains from the Laurel, Blackduck and Selkirk phases as well as European contact and trade goods from the historic phase. In addition, a discription, analysis and interpretation of the large sample of faunal remains collected at the Tailrace Bay site are provided by a paleo-zoologist, Paul Lukens.
