Librarian Reviews
Animal Tales: Favourite Stories from Chirp Magazine
Animal Tales: Favourite Stories from Chirp Magazine is a colourful collection of stories chosen from its numerous contributions by Canada’s top writers and illustrators. Teachers and teacherlibrarians will be glad to see this kind of book because we are forever saving such gems from Chirp’s ten yearly publications. What a great idea to choose the best of the best! There are 14 tales and poems listed in the table of contents. Some, like “Frank the Bear” and “Musical Mice” – both life-lessons – are written and illustrated by their respective creators David McPhail and Maryann Kovalski. Others in the book are collaborations, where illustrators, such as Ruth Ohi, manage just the right facial expressions for the young boy his on “First Day Back” as told by writer Sharon Jennings. Popular preschool and primary grade curricular themes are matched to the child’s developing imagination. Extremely helpful is the current information included on the authors and illustrators allowing the reader to find more or longer works by these same creators.
This book was pure pleasure to review. Not only are the tales reminiscent of days gone by with my girls, but the rhymes of some of them will be sure to become part of my ‘storytelling’ repetoire.
