Anguti's Amulet / Angutiup Ânguanga
This story, presented in both Inuktitut and English, was written by students working on an archaeological project in Labrador, a site inhabited from 1720-1750. The story draws on their work, historical documents and oral history. One winter, meat and oil have run out. Anguti’s anânsiak (Grandmother), an Ilitsitsok (shaman), predicts a terrible storm but that does not deter his father and brothers from hunting. Anguti and his sister set out after them. They kill a seal on an ice floe, then begin to drift far from home. After three days, they are rescued. Anânsiak had sewn amulets into Anguti’s parka to protect them. A separate section of the book provides images of an amulet and many tools and materials of Inuit life.Source: The Association of Book Publishers of BC.
