Description
This thoroughly illustrated exhibition catalogue provides an excellent introduction to Canadian art, its history, influences and movements. Divided into 14 chapters, Boulet’s essay outlines the development of art in Canada (particularly painting) from its European origins through to the establishment of specific regional artistic identities with groups such as the Group of Seven, The Beaver Hall Group and the Automatistes. Throughout, the author stresses the vital relationships between public and private collections in the growth and maintenance of a national art collection. Featured are remarkable works by artists such as Cornelius Krieghoff, A.Y. Jackson, Emily Carr, Lawren Harris, A.J. Casson, Jack Bush, Daphne Odjig and Alex Janvier. Each illustration is accompanied by a brief biographical annotation.
