This month we're writing the world at 49th Shelf, talking books with international themes and settings, about global issues, and travel. From our amazing list of Most Anticipated Books for Spring 2015, we've culled a few that fall under this umbrella that the globally minded among you should seek out to read.

Chicken in the Mango Tree: Food and Life in a Thai-Khmer Village, by Jeffrey Alford

About the book: In the small village of Kravan in rural Thailand, the food is like no other in the world. The diet is finely attuned to the land, taking advantage of what is local and plentiful. Made primarily of fresh, foraged vegetables infused with the dominant Khmer flavours of bird chilies, garlic, shallots, and fish sauce, the cuisine is completely distinct from the dishes typically associated with Thailand.

With my head buried in a cookbook project for two years solid (and a couple more before that as chef Shane M. Chartrand was seeking a place to begin the process of storytelling and recipe writing), I’ve kept myself inspired with the writing and talent of many Canadian food writers and cookbook authors.

Summer Eats: Kohlrabi Slaw, from COUNTY HEIRLOOMS

Get away without leaving your house with gorgeous new cookbook County Heirlooms: Recipes and Reflections from Prince Edward County, by Natalie Wollenberg and Leigh Nash, drawing on the amazing flavours of Prince Edward County to celebrity the culinary spirit of the place. 

This recipe for kohlrabi slaw (it's seriously delicious: my kids ate it!) comes from Ed and Sandi Taylor of Honey Wagon Farms, which grows regular & specialty vegetables without the use of herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides.

Salad

1 large kohlrabi, peeled, stems trimmed off, grated

2 medium carrots, peeled and grated

1⁄2 red onion, sliced
4 tbsp chopped cilantro (optional)

1⁄4 cup golden raisins or dried sweetened cranberries (optional)

Dressing

1⁄4 cup mayonnaise

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar, unfiltered

1 tbsp maple syrup
(adjust quantity to desired taste)

1 tsp salt
