Description

Join one special boy on a journey through Topsy-Turvy Town. The place he lives is a town where it rains broccoli that crunches when it lands on the tops of umbrellas, where police officers march to a very different beat, where you can go fishing in your living room or even juggle a wildcat before bedtime. But not everybody shares his vision of Topsy-Turvy Town. His big sister thinks the very idea is crazy. His aunt thinks he’s making it up. As for Dad, he ignores the weird and wonderful things his son sees. Luckily, he can share his imaginative world with someone who understands, his mom.

Topsy-Turvy Town

Welcome to Topsy-Turvy Town, where a small boy’s quirky and hilarious perceptions are brought to life. Here it rains broccoli, cars are made from chocolate and have pineapple wheels, buildings can walk, fish smoke pipes and dogs play tubas. Things are delightfully off-kilter in this little boy’s world, but it’s all in good fun. There are laughing policemen, joyful postmen, and although most of the adults have a serious tilt to their gait and are dismissive of his imaginings, our protagonist remains upbeat. After dinner, there’s still time to go fishing in his living room, and to juggle a wildcat!

Luc Melanson’s distinctive illustrations may be familiar to Canadian readers. Le Grand Voyage de Monsieur won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Children’s Illustration in 2002, while his illustrations in My Great Big Mama were shortlisted for the same award in 2009. Whimsy and wit emanate from these pages, where bold, textured shapes combine with a warm palette to create a comforting, playful environment that perfectly conveys a child’s view of the world. Buildings loom large, adults have impossibly long legs and sport distracted expressions, but a friend’s smile overshadows everything else, and a hug from mum is the best reward for a very active imagination.

Children and adults alike will be drawn into this vibrant, imaginary world and will rejoice that one boy’s creativity remains undaunted by non-believers.

Topsy-Turvy Town

Join one special boy on a journey through Topsy-Turvy Town where it rains broccoli and you can go fishing in your living room or share a bath with a robot. Even though Topsy-Turvy Town lives in his head, and most of his family don’t believe it’s there, he can still share his imaginative world with one special person — his mom! This book was first published in French as Ma drôle de ville.
