Description

Something Fierce, winner of Canada Reads 2012, is a gripping story of love, war and resistance. A rare first-hand account of revolutionary life, it takes the reader inside war-ridden Peru, dictatorship-run Bolivia, post-Malvinas Argentina and Pinochet's Chile. Passionate and deep personal, Carmen captures the struggle between her commitment to the movement and her youthful desires and budding sexuality.

Good read, learned a alot!

I liked this book, I thought that I learned a lot about South American history but also found the writing interesting, entertaining and easy to follow. I think she is a great writer, able to combine history with juicy coming of age details.

Something Fierce: Memoirs of a Revolutionary Daughter

Aguirre plunges readers into her riveting revolutionary life, starting from age six through her teens, during the South American Revolutions of the late 70s and 80s. In 1973, her family fled from Chile to Vancouver, after her parents were exiled during a military Coup; later they relocated to Peru and Bolivia. As Chilean Resistance members, her mom and step-dad held tactical meetings in their homes, which were often raided. Aguirre grew up overhearing her parents plans, although she was sworn to secrecy. Inevitably, she adopted their militant lifestyle. She later joined the resistance movement at 18 where she continued to live a life on the edge. This memoir reveals the living terrors of innocent civilians and the determination of freedom fighters caught in the Latin American revolutions.

Caution: Contains sexual references and coarse language.
