Description

Murphy's mother has just moved him and their cat, Mousetrap, back to the reserve in Port Alberni. Although he belongs to the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation, Murphy is sure that he won't fit in, and he worries about Mousetrap, who has always been an indoor cat. When a bunch of local boys drag him to their soccer practice, put him in goal and pelt him with balls, he believes that his worst fear has come true. However, he seems to be discovering a new talent at the same time. And perhaps he has misjudged. Being a light-skinned city boy thrust onto a reserve far from the city is not easy, but maybe Murphy has what it takes.

Editorial Review

"Aptly conveys the feelings of a child relocating to a new community and school...An excellent way of introducing children to life on a First Nation reserve. Recommended."

Murphy and Mousetrap

Murphy is a city kid and Mousetrap is an inside cat. When Murphy’s mother moves them to her old home on a First Nations reserve, all that has to change. Murphy’s cousins are bigger and tougher and bully the newcomer. Forced to play goalie in pick-up games of soccer, Murphy plans to fail so that they will leave him alone. However, his plan goes awry and he discovers an innate talent that wins him respect. Mousetrap, too, his fluffy white fur often a dingy grey, is learning to survive in the outside world. By the time of the Easter soccer tournament, Murphy is one of the team and being called “little white guy” doesn’t seem so bad. He doesn’t believe he is good enough to help his team win the trophy until he faces his first penalty shoot out.

Olsen lives in the Tsartlip First Nation and works as an Aboriginal community development consultant. She is the author of Catching Springamong other titles.

Murphy and Mousetrap (Orca Young Readers)

When Murphy’s family moves from the city, Murphy is sure they are going to be miserable. Being a light-skinned boy thrust onto a reserve is not easy. Does Murphy have what it takes?
