Description

Murphy's mother has just moved him and their cat, Mousetrap, back to the reserve in Port Alberni. Although he belongs to the Nuu-chah-nulth Nation, Murphy is sure that he won't fit in, and he worries about Mousetrap, who has always been an indoor cat. When a bunch of local boys drag him to their soccer practice, put him in goal and pelt him with balls, he believes that his worst fear has come true. However, he seems to be discovering a new talent at the same time. And perhaps he has misjudged. Being a light-skinned city boy thrust onto a reserve far from the city is not easy, but maybe Murphy has what it takes.

About the Author

Sylvia Olsen is the author of many books and has been nominated for and won numerous awards. She has spent most of her life living in theTsartlip First Nation, where her children and grandchildren now live. Sylvia usually writes for children and young adults about the place between cultures where Canada's First Nations and settlers come together. She is also a storyteller who loves to work with young people to help them find their written and spoken voice. Sylvia is the mother of four and grandmother of seven. Murphy and Mousetrap

Murphy is a city kid and Mousetrap is an inside cat. When Murphy’s mother moves them to her old home on a First Nations reserve, all that has to change. Murphy’s cousins are bigger and tougher and bully the newcomer. Forced to play goalie in pick-up games of soccer, Murphy plans to fail so that they will leave him alone. However, his plan goes awry and he discovers an innate talent that wins him respect. Mousetrap, too, his fluffy white fur often a dingy grey, is learning to survive in the outside world. By the time of the Easter soccer tournament, Murphy is one of the team and being called “little white guy” doesn’t seem so bad. He doesn’t believe he is good enough to help his team win the trophy until he faces his first penalty shoot out.

Olsen lives in the Tsartlip First Nation and works as an Aboriginal community development consultant. She is the author of Catching Springamong other titles.
