Description

This fictional story of a young girls courage sets the stage for the heroism that made Laura Secord a household name. When her cow, Peg, wanders off one day Laura follows her and soon finds herself deep in the forest. Peg dies giving birth and Laura struggles to bring the newborn calf home safely. The final pages include factual information about one of Canada's best known historical figures.

About the Authors
Maxine Trottier has written many award-winning children’s books, including The Tiny Kite of Eddie Wing (Canadian Library Association Book of the Year for Children), Claire’s Gift (Mr. Christie’s Book Award), Sister to the Wolf (Society of School Librarians International Honor Book) and Under a Shooting Star (Geoffrey Bilson Award Finalist). She was inspired to write Migrant after spending summers in Leamington, Ontario, where she encountered many Mennonites from Mexico.

Karen Reczuch has illustrated many award-winning children’s books. Loon by Susan Vande Griek won the TD Norma Fleck Award for Canadian Children’s Non-fiction, the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Picture Book Award and the Vancouver Children’s Literature Roundtable Information Book Award. Karen’s other publications include West Coast Wild, winner of the VCLR Information Book Award; The Auction by Jan Andrews, a Governor General’s Award finalist; Just Like New by Ainslie Manson, winner of the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award; and Salmon Creek, winner of the BC Book Prize. Karen’s work includes scientific, historical and archeological illustration, and has been exhibited internationally.

Maxine Trottier is the author of Claire's Gift, winner of the Mr. Christie's Book Award. Her books include the award winning The Tiny Kite of Eddie Wing, Alison's House, The Voyage of Wood Duck, and Heartsong. Karen Reczuch is the award winning illustrator of Just Like New, The Auction, The Harvest Queen . Karen wanted to be ballerina, but found herself drawing ballerinas instead.
