Description

This fictional story of a young girls courage sets the stage for the heroism that made Laura Secord a household name. When her cow, Peg, wanders off one day Laura follows her and soon finds herself deep in the forest. Peg dies giving birth and Laura struggles to bring the newborn calf home safely. The final pages include factual information about one of Canada's best known historical figures.

Karen Reczuch has illustrated many award-winning children’s books. Her recent works include Turtle Pond by James Gladstone and West Coast Wild by Deborah Hodge, which won the Children’s Literature Roundtables of Canada Information Book Award. She has also illustrated The Auction by Jan Andrews, a Governor General’s Award finalist; Just Like New by Ainslie Manson, winner of the Amelia Frances Howard-Gibbon Award; and Salmon Creek, winner of the BC Book Prize. Karen’s work includes scientific, historical and archaeological illustration, and has been exhibited internationally. Karen lives in Lake Country, BC.

Her books include the award winning The Tiny Kite of Eddie Wing, Alison's House, The Voyage of Wood Duck, and Heartsong. Karen Reczuch is the award winning illustrator of Just Like New, The Auction, The Harvest Queen . Karen wanted to be ballerina, but found herself drawing ballerinas instead.
