Editorial Review

NATIONAL BESTSELLER

“This debut novel from a Canadian writer proves that solid storytelling and confident craftsmanship can rejuvenate one of the hoariest of all horror clichés. … Filled with romance and supernatural intrigue, this book will surely remind readers of Anne Rice’s sophisticated refurbishings of the vampire story.” Publishers Weekly
"As smooth as cream all the way, sure to gain fans.” Kirkus Reviews

“An impressive debut thriller...Kelley Armstrong is very good on the sheer exhilaration of shape-changing, of running on four feet through forests, suburban greenery and urban back alleys.” Amazon UK

Book one in a strong urban fantasy series

When I first picked up Bitten, I found it hard to believe that I had somehow missed this great Canadian author for so long. On the positive side, because I had neglected to read Kelley Armstrong's books for so long, I started the Women of the Otherworld series knowing that there was a full series ready for the reading.

Book 1, Bitten, is a strong start to a great urban fantasy series. In Bitten we are introduced to the werewolves, and in successive books, new characters emerge and intertwine, the point of view changing to focus on other characters. But back to Bitten. It is as strong an urban fantasy novel as any out there. The story is solid. The world making done in a believable fashion, that keeps in its sights the traditional lore of the supernatural, but at the same time reads as something fresh and new.

Elena Michaels definitely fits the role of the kick-ass heroine, but her strengths are balanced by vulnerability as she tries to decide which world she truly belongs in, the supernatural or the human world that was taken from her. The romance element in the story is complicated by the circumstances of her change into a werewolf, and I think Armstrong did a fine job of creating a complex character, who sees her own weaknesses, and instead of ignoring them, eventually tries to face them and come to terms with who she is.
