Born at the beginning of the Arctic winter, a male and female polar bear stay in the den for a number of months before they are ready to venture out. But soon they must follow their hungry mother out on the dangerous journey to the sea ice, where she will hunt for food. It will be several years before the little ones will be good enough hunters to fend for themselves in the Arctic wilderness.
About the authors
Aubrey Lang has been a freelance writer and photographer for more than fifteen years. A science writer and wildlife photographer for the past twenty-five years, Wayne Lynch has seen his work published in more than two dozen countries. Together they've produced nearly forty titles for children and adults, and countless articles in well-known nature magazines, including Ranger Rick, Owl, Wild, National Wildlife and Canadian Geographic.

Lynch is also an award-winning science writer, a popular guest lecturer, and a veteran photo safari leader. His practical and entertaining approach to natural history, whether it be through the written or spoken word, has attracted the admiration of audiences worldwide. He has photographed both common and unusual creatures in their native habitat in more than fifty countries, travelling extensively for long periods of time and often undergoing considerable physical hardship to get the "perfect shot."
