Description

Sam is not looking forward to the upcoming summer vacation until he meets Simon, the new boy at school. Together they form a club, The Bats, and work together to create secret signals, rituals and everything else a proper secret society requires. They also set up a system of booby traps to keep the neighbourhood bully Ted and his gang, The Gorillas, from getting into the new clubhouse. But Sam and Simon catch more than they bargained for in their trap and become the city's newest heroes.

This Level 4 First Flight Chapter Book portrays two young boys that newly-confident readers will be able to identify with as they follow Sam and Simon's summer plans into an exciting adventure.

Editorial Review

"This latest installment in the First Flight series of easy chapter books is a pleasant romp into the mind of an eight-year-old. Young readers will find characters to which they can relate and enough ideas to start their own chapter of the Bat Club."
- The Calgary Herald

Sharon Jennings skillfully and believably develops a story where Sam and Simon take on the school bullies and successfully save the neighbourhood from burglars. . . This plot-driven novella with pictures by John Mardon will be a hit with the early reading set."
- The Lethbridge Herald

"This enjoyable First Flight Reader features short chapters with easy-to-read spacing and illustrations that clarify the text. Its fast-paced plot will appeal to young readers with a sense of adventure. Children can easily identify with the protagonists' thoughts and feelings and relate to the way the characters express themselves. The situations the boys find themselves in are believable and their actions appropriate. It is especially gratifying that the young heroes receive recognition for preventing a crime. Recommended."
